LETTER: Baywatch

Baywatch (January 21) was an insightful exposition on the goings-on at beaches around Auckland.

I think everyone would agree that our coastline is a significant part of what makes this region such a pleasant place. In fact, the fourth best city in the world to live in, according to an international survey released last May.

What then will become of the beaches under our new structures of administration being put in place? Currently, amenities and environs are looked after by a combination of regional council, local councils and goodwill from local citizens and surf lifesaving clubs, etc.

Where, in all the discussions about water utilities and transport initiatives, is the detail about what will be done to protect and improve our beachfronts?

It couldn't possibly be the case that the expense and labour will be left to the citizens around these reserves? If that is the case, it will swiftly become apparent which beaches have affluent neighbours to keep the place safe and attractive while others are left to deteriorate.

Should that occur, the beaches featured in the article could well tell a very different story in years to come.
