What's on for Waitangi Day

The highest profile celebrations of Waitangi Day will take place at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, overlooking the Bay of Islands, but Auckland will be abuzz with events as well.

Waitangi Day Family Celebrations
Family day, featuring New Zealand reggae giants Katchafire, David Dallas, Ardijah, Maisey Rika, Bella Kalolo, Sons of Zion and Foundation.

And for a Year of the Dragon twist, China's number one reggae band, Long Shen Dao, will entertain the crowd.

The day features a mihi whakatau (ceremonial welcome), tiriti korero (treaty education and information), nga toi (arts stall area) and a tamariki zone with free children's rides and activities.

The event is alcohol- and smoke-free. All parking areas will be clearly identified.

The Black Seeds
The launch of Summer Sounds comes by way of The Black Seeds. Big-beat funk mixed with vintage roots reggae will make for a great afternoon concert. Supported by Henderson's dDub and Sassy & The Pocketbook.
All ages concert.

Waitangi Day Festival, Muriwai
Muriwai is holding its first Waitangi Day Festival with the theme "Every Day is Waitangi Day". One of NZ's most spectacular surf beaches will be the backdrop for artists Anika Moa, Moana & the Tribe, Pacific Curls, Nat Rose, Ardijah, Majic, Maisey Rika and more.

More than 15 painters, photographers, sculptors and jewellers who live in and around Muriwai will be creating, exhibiting and selling new works for the special Waitangi Day Exhibition.

In-between performances, a series of speakers will give their take on the theme from the Hot Seat onstage, while audiences will be invited to buy "hangi-in-a-pie". It's an alcohol and smoke-free, zero-waste event. Family picnic. Free water.
