A seven-year-old North Shore girl has a great story to tell her friends at school today.

Madeleine Johnson-Marsh was swimming at Browns Bay beach yesterday when she came to the rescue of a baby, about 11-months-old, in the shallows of the water.

Madeleine's mother, Teresa, says the baby was knocked over by a wave and taken out into deeper water, where she ended up face down.

"My seven-year-old was about thigh-deep in the water and she came in and then ran through the surf and lifted the baby straight up out of the water and handed her to her mum."

Teresa Marsh says the baby's mother, who's scared of the water, was very grateful to Madeleine for her quick thinking.
