One person is dead and two people are in critical conditions following two crashes in Auckland overnight.

Emergency services were called to a single car crash at Ngapaipi Road, Orakei about 2.20am.

The front seat passenger in the vehicle died at the scene.

Police are seeking the driver of the car, who was seen running from the crash.

Earlier, emergency services were called to Tamaki Drive about 11.39pm, after a car crashed into trees near Okahu Bay.

Police said the two occupants of the vehicle are in a critical condition.

The Police Serious Crash Unit are to investigate both crashes.

Roads at both crash scenes are expected to reopen about 6.30am in time for peak traffic.
