The Channel Islands beckon artist Karl Amundsen who's answering its call, writes Sharu Delilkan.

Rather aptly, Karl Amundsen has titled his final exhibition Release, before leaving for an international residency in Jersey, in the Channel Islands, for six months.

His first solo exhibition at Northart, in Northcote, will feature around 17 paintings he's done since the beginning of this year.

Although known for abstracts, Amundsen says this show is based on the human form because it is about reestablishing who he is and about laying  ghosts to rest.

"I have recently come out of a relationship so I felt the need let it all out and release it - hence the name; and also due to the fact I'm going away for a while."

Although leaving the country, he says going to Jersey feels like going home, having been there many times since his first visit in 1986.

"I have many friends and family there so it's great to be able to spend time with them, especially since they're growing old and it may be the last time I get to see them."

The professional artist, 16 years working in oils and eight years teaching, was taught and mentored by the late Dame Louise Henderson, a painter of intensely colourful artworks. American artist Christiane Corbat, a strong force in the arts and healing movement, also taught and influenced him.

Amundsen says he finds drawing more enjoyable than painting. "I find it easier to draw because I know how to approach it. I often end up using paint as a drawing medium rather than paint itself. Something goes off in my head when I realise I have to do painting."

Release, Northart, Norman King Square (Opp library), Ernie Mays St, Northcote Shopping Centre, until July 25. Free entry. Contact: ph 480 9633.
