Hold up. For the last five years straight there has in fact been decling traffic volumes cross the bridge. That's right vehicle numbers have been dropping!
However if they build this extra crossing, several important points must be clarified:
1. The additional crossing is exactly that, additional - strategic security in the event of a catastrophe.
2. Six-lane road tunnels would allow for removal or upgrade of the clip-ons.
3. Ten (or 14 if clip-ons are rejuvenated) lanes through Esmond Rd ... who has thought about this nightmare yet?
Regardless, I believe they should only build heavy rail tunnels.
International studies indicate many times more economic benefits from rail v road. Every dollar spent on rail, saves motorists $4.
Plus as stated above, traffic volumes are declining. Oh yeah, peak oil is just around the corner.
