LETTER: Out of beach

I read with interest the article about the difficulty for wheelchair users in gaining access to Auckland's beautiful beaches. I am in the same predicament as Ms Hartley and encounter daily obstacles that prevent me from carrying on a "normal life". This ranges from the lack of ramps in buildings to the lack of enforced mobility parking bays (especially abused by delivery vans), as well as the lack of "truly" accessible public transport. Clearly, life for people with physical disabilities in Auckland is not easy.

Auckland has a long way to go if it wishes to be a modern, accessible world class city. Let's hope that some improvement will be made in the near future and that the bureaucrats will take into consideration the need of a part of the population who pay rates, yet cannot use the facilities that they have paid for simply because they are mobility challenged.
