As a life member and historian of the Karekare Surf Club, I feel I must put right the inaccuracies.
The structure on the beach mentioned in the story as the first clubhouse was in fact the original stone gear shed. It stored the surf lifesaving reels and four wood and plywood teardrop surf skis. It is now being encroached by sand but was never a surf club.
The surf club also never operated out of a bus but used the changing sheds of Winchelsea House tennis courts as the first club house known affectionately as the Grand Hotel.
It burnt down in the 1940s and the first one roomed clubhouse on the beach was opened n 1952.
The present site for the intended new surf club was gifted by the Farley family who owned the guesthouse and is one of two surf clubs on the west coast owned by the club freehold.
