The Auckland Hearts took the 2011-2012 season one day title, beating the Canterbury Magicians.
The Auckland Hearts missed out on the double on finals weekend in Christchurch, but came home the women's Action Cricket one-day champions, and runners-up in the T20.
Saturday's one-day final saw the Hearts chase down the Canterbury Magicians' 201 with 4.1 overs to spare, thanks to a magnificent century from Hearts import player Stafanie Taylor, the 2011 ICC Women's cricketer of the year. The West Indies batswoman scored 110 and was out just before the winning two runs were scored.
She was well supported by fellow opener Stephanie Curtis, with the two setting up the innings nicely with a 113-run partnership for the first wicket. The middle order of Maddie Green, Katie Perkins and 16-year-old Lauren Down all fell cheaply before the experience Victoria Lind steadied the ship hitting the winning runs with her 24 no.
On Saturday night, ahead of the T20 final on Sunday, coach Maia Lewis said the Hearts were determined to come home with two national titles.
"We are happy, but keeping our feet on the ground. We want two trophies in the cabinet," she said.
That wasn't to be despite the T20 final starting well enough. Stafanie Taylor was in the action with the ball too, snaring the Magicians' key batswoman Frances MacKay lbw for 0 (after MacKay had scored 93 the day before). Lauren Down ignored her youth to grab impressive White Fern Amy Satterthwaite's wicket for 14, caught Katie Perkins. The Magicians stumbled to just 113, a target that should have been gettable for Auckland.
The Canterbury side showed their experience with Satterthwaite exacting revenge on the Hearts with four wickets, but it was Erin Birmingham who did the real damage early on, grabbing Stafanie Taylor for 7, then number 3 Maddie Green for a duck.
The Hearts crumbled to be all out for 84, with only Stephanie Curtis scoring any runs of note, 29.
Still, the underdogs can be reasonably happy with taking one from two. Last season they were placed fifth, so the turnaround has been dramatic.
The Hearts will be pleased with the value they have gained from Taylor, who now returns to Jamaica.
Men in final too
The Auckland Aces have secured themselves a home final after comprehensively beating the Otago Volts in the HRV T20 played straight after the women's final on Sunday.
The Aces restricted the Volts to 150 and cruised home for the loss of just two wickets, with Martin Guptill continuing his extraordinary form in T20 this season, making 68 not out. Earlier, he had also taken one of the catches of the season, perhaps even rivalling Bevan Small's remarkable assist that has now become this season's most viewed catch.
Guptill has scored 416 runs in 8 games, with an average of 83.2, streets ahead of the next best Brendon McCullum on 269 (33.6 ave).
The Aces' import player Azhar Mahmood also proved his worth, scoring 51 in the chase and picking up two wickets.
The Aces' HRV T20 final will be played at Colin Maiden on January 22, against the Canterbury Wizards. The Wizards and Aces will test each other out when they face one another on Tuesday at Colin Maiden in the last round of the regular season at 5pm.
