Gardening: Jobs to do

If you're planting seeds in your vegetable garden, remember to mark what's where.
If you're planting seeds in your vegetable garden, remember to mark what's where.

Transplant trees

Transplanting evergreen trees and shrubs can now begin, and there's still time to take cuttings of shrubs for propagating. But leave planting of deciduous trees until closer to winter.

Trim hedges

Get your hedges trimmed now while the weather's still OK, and they'll put on new growth before winter.

Sow annuals

Sow hyacinths, polyanthus, poppies, pansies and sweet peas.

Banish weeds

Deal to weeds. Whether you want to pull them out or use weed-killer, it's important to stop them spreading their seeds.

Keep track of veges

If you're planting seeds in your vegetable garden, remember to mark what's where. Thread the seed packet on to a twig and stick it in at the top of the row. Use old stakes or bits of timber to separate different areas of the vege garden so you can remember where the peas finish and the carrots begin.
