There was a major upset this afternoon in the BMW NZ Polo Open with favoured team Rodd & Gunn, the team featuring Ross George, knocked out of the playoff rounds by the lesser fancied team Mitavite.

Rodd & Gunn, last year's runner-up and winners in 2010, were widely favoured to win the match but were beaten 8-7 by Mitavite. The loss, Rodd & Gunn's second in the tournament, relegates them on Finals Day to play off for 5th or 6th place.

In today's other match BMW, captained by NZ star player John Paul Clarkin, easily defeated Veuve Clicquot by 12 goals to 7. The margin is a little misleading as it was Veuve Clicquot's first match of the tournament and while they appeared outgunned in the first three chukkas, they came back strongly in the second half to appear very competitive.

Play-off rounds continue tomorrow to decide who will play in the semi finals on Saturday.
