A Chinese man whose body was found in Auckland Harbour has been identified by a relative this morning.

The 22-year-old Chinese student, who was found on Saturday, is believed to have drowned, though police are still investigating what led to his death.

Detective Sergeant Scott Hunter said a relative living in New Zealand had identified the man for police today.

Police will not reveal the student's name until next of kin have been advised in China.

A public appeal was initiated after no missing person reports matching the man's description were filed.

Police had released an image of a colourful emblem on the man's T-shirt in the hope someone would recognise it.

Mr Hunter thanked the public for their support.
