The Local Government Commission has struck Auckland's new boundaries.

The region will be divided into 13 wards, one more than the proposed set-up announced in November last year.

The wards will be called: Rodney, Albany, North Shore, Waitakere, Whau, Albert-Eden-Roskill, Waitemata and Gulf, Orakei, Maungakiekie-Tamaki, Te Irirangi, Manukau, Manurewa-Papakura and Franklin.

The final determinations were announced by commission chair Sue Piper at the Stamford Plaza this morning to a room of about 40 local politicians and officials.

The northern boundary of the region has been confirmed as proposed, while the southern boundary with Franklin and Waikato has been adjusted.

The southern limit now runs easterly from just north of Waihihi Bay in the Firth of Thames excluding the reserve around Mangatangi Reservoir that was earlier proposed.

The south also now includes a block of land around Happy Valley and the boundaries through Bombay, Pukekohe and Waiuku have been confirmed.

Throughout the Auckland region there will be 21 boards, rather than the 19 that had been proposed late last year.
